2006 Carmenere Gran Reserva Casa Rivas Maipo Valley
Review this store Wine Tear into some juicy steaks with this terrific, damsony-rich, tobacco and bramble fruit-scented Chilean red, from old, low-yielding Carmenère vines. A star of London's 2004 Wines of Chile tasting, it's a joint effort from Mariano Salas (who owns vineyards in Maipo's cool, dry Maria Pinto Valley) and Margaux-trained biodynamic winemaker Alvaro Espinoza. Carmenère is a Bordeaux fugitive, so amenable to Alvaro's skills. Judicious oak-ageing has brought its finer points to the fore. £11.99
