2008 Aglianico Pipoli Vigneti Del Vulture Basilicata
Wine Aglianico thrives in the mountainous region of Basilicata and in particular on the slopes of the extinct volcano, Vulture. The vineyards of Vulture are higher in altitude than most in Italy and so the slow-maturing Aglianico can ripen at its own pace. The area is beautifully sparse, just mountainous plains, fields of crops and a smattering of vineyards. The Pipoli is a wonderful example of Aglianico; dark, robust fruit with body and structure. What is really lovely though is the hint of softness. There is a rich, silky almost guilty pleasure in the finish. This wine is destined for hearty, simple food. The perfect match for me is lamb stew with potato and onion torte. A simple, soul-warming combination. £10.50
